Going Deeper: Influential Leaders with Peel Regional Police
In 2021-2022 I worked with a group of influential leaders at Peel Regional Police.
This is an incredibly challenging level of leadership in policing. They hold responsibility for many individuals while also trying to align and implement initiatives from above.
At the end of their program, they asked to continue their learning for a second year. This year I have witnessed them further develop and embed their leadership skills into the work they do.
It has been a privilege to work with the leaders who are committed to: their own learning, their people, and shifting culture within their organization.
I'm honoured to share their experience in this leadership program.
Women in Leadership: Testimonials from Peel Regional Police
There is a lot of research about the role of women in leadership and some of the unique, gender based challenges that occur. I work with women across many sectors who are seeking to fully bring themselves to their work.
Peel Regional Police, in particular, has really focused in on the women within their organization. Women leaders who have worked for 20 plus years have joined together to create options for learning and growth to support other women in the organization.
One path that we have developed together is the Women in Leadership program. In this program, all women are seen to be leaders using Brene Brown’s definition of leadership: “a leader as anyone who takes responsibility for finding the potential in people and in processes and has the courage to develop that potential.” Through two half-day workshops, skills to become a more coach-like leader are taught. These new skills are then practiced on real-time challenges over the next 3 months in smaller coaching circles.
What we are seeing is incredible connections, increases in confidence, strengthened communication, and culture-changing conversations that bridge the sworn and civilian members.
I am proud and honoured to share these reflections from some of the participants on the last day of the program.

Meet Inspector Shelley Thompson from Peel Regional Police Services.
Through her work with Heather Clayton Consulting, she was introduced to the tool, Type Coach. In Shelley's words, it is one of the most valuable resource tools she has used as part of her leadership development.

In addition to other police services, over the past 18 months, I have worked closely with approximately 400 leaders at Peel Regional Police in individual coaching sessions, leaders coaching circles, Intentional Leadership Training courses, and symposiums for Women in Leadership and Senior Leaders.
Together we have made huge strides in their already brilliant leadership teams and systems.
