This is the time of year when I work from Mexico. I continue with my coaching, have meetings and focus on learning and growing, both as a coach and as an individual. I was struck yesterday by the reminder that being a ‘learner’ can be uncomfortable…
This year I have transferred some of my limited tennis skills to the pickle ball court -a sport that is quite popular here. While I can hold my own with relative beginners on a court, I am noticing there are lots of little rules. In yesterday’s games, I was continuously being ‘reminded’ in some cases and ‘told’ in others, where I should stand, how I should hit, and that my serve was illegal!! Deep breath…lean into the learning… put ego aside…
We are also going three times a week to a Spanish conversation class. I am in a class with three others who are a bit ahead of me. There’s nothing like the feeling of a teacher speaking a full Spanish sentences and looking to you expectantly for an answer. Deep breath…lean into the learning…put ego aside…
I am also excited to be working on upgrading my certification with the International Coaching Federation. I love the rigour and the emphasis on growth in this organization. One requirement is to submit two 30-40 minute tapes of coaching, in an effort to demonstrate 9 competencies – which have about 5-10 sub competencies each. I have hired a coach supervisor to support this work and help me to get ready.
Yesterday I listened to the tape of my coaching earlier this week with the three pages of competencies in front of me. Such a great exercise. I was struck by how what we intend and our actual impact can be quite different. I made notes and look forward to the feedback from my coach when we meet later this week. I expect she will tell me where there are areas of strength and places to really dig in to make the coaching even more effective. Deep breath… lean into the learning… put ego aside…
How do you continue to learn? What is your relationship with feedback? What are your learning goals – personal or professional in 2020?
